Why Do We Build Software?
First, we build software to manage our ProjectXnet hosting environment. This includes core software like our ProjectXnet Portal and other add-ons. Some customer facing features are the dynamic branding & homepage, signup wizard and single-sign-on utilities which provide a more seamless user experience. Some Administrative features like billing, usage, and infrastructure management help us provide a better overall quality of service.
Second, we know from experience that over time, any serious implementation will need some type of custom development. Whether that is extending an existing application with a custom form or web interface, building an Office Business Application (OBA), or creating a PDF/Excel batch tool for record keeping.
Third, many software vendors will say that you should select a product that does everything, and that custom software is a thing of the past. What they usually neglect to tell you is that developing custom software has become nearly as easy as configuring it in their application. Many would prefer you to pay 6 figures to configure their one size fits all application, vs. creating a custom project that does not require use of their product or licenses. Oddly, at the same time, vendors still offer API's, Web Services, and Developer Networks because they know that it is not possible to have one product do everything.
By no means do we recommend that everything be custom, but we always suggest that various solutions be understood before making a decision to buy 100 extra licenses to satisfy a requirement that might be done for far less, and with better quality than an out of the box solution being stretched to or beyond its limits. |
